ER80S-B2 vs ER80S-D2

Both ER80S-B2 & ER80S-D2 welding wires are low alloy steel solid filler wires as per AWS A5.28 specification.

Although, both these wires are having different chemical compositions & mechanical properties. They are used for different welding applications.

ER80S-B2 is a Chrome-Moly base welding wire while the ER80S-D2 is a Manganese-Moly base filler wire.

ER80S-B2 is used for welding of Cr-Mo steel for high-temperature applications while ER80S-D2 is used for welding of high strength low alloy steel and carbon steel.

ER80S-B2 requires a post-weld heat treatment for welding while ER80S-D2 can be used in as-welded or PWHT conditions. ER80S-D2 is mostly used in as-welded conditions only.

ER80S-D2 has a high amount of deoxidizer (Mn & Si) thus helping to control welding porosity when welding with CO2 as shielding gas. ER80S-B2 however must be used with argon gas shielding only.

There are no toughness requirements for ER80S-B2 welding filler wire but ER80S-D2 requires a minimum weld toughness of 20 ft·lbf at –20°F (27 J at –30°C).

ER80S-B2 Equivalent Stick Welding (SMAW) Rod

ER80S-B2 Equivalent Stick Welding (SMAW) Rod is E8018-B2 or E8015-B2 rod as per the AWS A5.5 welding electrode specification.

See also  E7015 Welding Rod

Both ER80S-B2 & E8018-B2 give the same weld deposit properties although the welding process varies.

Preheat & Interpass temperature for ER80S-B2

Being low alloy steel with added alloying elements such as Nickel, chromium & Moly, ER80S-B2 requires stringent control on welding preheat, interpass & PWHT conditions to avoid cracking problems.

The minimum welding preheat temperature when welding with ER80S-B2 is 275°F (135°C).

The interpass temperature for welding application using R80S-B2 is a maximum of 325°F (165°C).

ER80S-B2 Welding Polarity for TIG & MIG Welding

ER80S-B2 is welded using DCEN polarity in TIG welding. Pure argon is used as welding gas for gas shielding. The welding polarity of ER80S-B2 in MIG welding is DCEP.

What is ER80S-B2 used for?

ER80S-B2 is a welding wire that is used for welding carbon and low alloy steels. It has a chemical composition of Fe-Mn-C-Si and a tensile strength of 80,000 psi.

This wire is especially useful for welding high-strength, low alloy steels because it has good toughness and ductility.

ER80S-B2 TIG-MIG solid welding wire is used for welding of 0.5Cr-0.5Mo, 1Cr-0.5Mo, & 1-1/4Cr-1/2Mo low alloy steels. It is also used for dissimilar welding of Chrome-Moly steel to carbon steel.
