ER80S-B2 MIG Filler Wire is a versatile welding wire that can be used for a variety of applications. It is an all-position wire that can be used in both TIG and MIG welding.
ER80S-B2 is supposed to use for welding in post-weld heat treatment conditions & if used in as welded condition, it requires special care.
ER80S-B2 Wire Specification
AWS Specification for ER80S-B2 is AWS A5.28. AWS A5.28 covers the chemical composition, mechanical properties, PWHT conditions and test requirements for ER80S-B2 wire classification.
ER80S-B2 Wire Meaning & Full Form
ER80S-B2 is the wire classification as per AWS A5.28 Specification for low alloy steel electrodes & rods for Gas shielded welding arc processes such as TIG & MIG welding.
The meaning of ER80S-B2 Filler wire/ Rod is:
- ER: means Electrode
- 80: means minimum 80 Ksi or 80000 psi minimum tensile strength of the weld deposit with ER80S-B2 wire.
- S: stands for Solid wire.
- B2: this means that the wire type is a Cr-Mo wire. You can find the full chemical composition in AWS A5.28 Table 1. Also, given in this post below is the full chemical composition of ER80S-B2.
Chemical Composition of ER80S-B2 TIG MIG Wire
The chemical composition of ER80S-B2 is specified in AWS A5.28 low alloy welding electrodes specification. Below are the range of permitted elements for ER80S-B2 welding wire chemistry:
|Other elements Total||0.50|
Mechanical Properties of ER80S-B2 TIG MIG Wire
Mechanical properties of ER80S-B2 is also specified in AWS A5.28 specifications. The minimum tensile strength of ER80S-B2 is 80 Ksi (550 MPa), the Yield strength is 68 Ksi (470 MPa) & minimum elongation of 19%.
A summary of the mechanical properties of ER80S-B2 required as per AWS A5.28 are given in the below table:
|Tensile Strength||80 Ksi (550 MPa) minimum|

ER80S-B2 vs ER80S-D2
Both ER80S-B2 & ER80S-D2 welding wires are low alloy steel solid filler wires as per AWS A5.28 specification. Although, both these wires are having different chemical compositions & mechanical properties. They are used for different welding applications.
ER80S-B2 is a Chrome-Moly base welding wire while the ER80S-D2 is a Manganese-Moly base filler wire.
ER80S-B2 is used for welding of Cr-Mo steel for high-temperature applications while ER80S-D2 is used for welding of high strength low alloy steel and carbon steel.
ER80S-B2 requires a post-weld heat treatment for welding while ER80S-D2 can be used in as-welded or PWHT conditions. ER80S-D2 is mostly used in as-welded conditions only.
ER80S-D2 has a high amount of deoxidizer (Mn & Si) thus helping to control welding porosity when welding with CO2 as shielding gas. ER80S-B2 however must be used with argon gas shielding only.
There are no toughness requirements for ER80S-B2 welding filler wire but ER80S-D2 requires a minimum weld toughness of 20 ft·lbf at –20°F (27 J at –30°C).
ER80S-B2 Equivalent Stick Welding (SMAW) Rod
ER80S-B2 Equivalent Stick Welding (SMAW) Rod is E8018-B2 or E8015-B2 rod as per the AWS A5.5 welding electrode specification. Both ER80S-B2 & E8018-B2 give the same weld deposit properties although the welding process varies.
Preheat & Interpass temperature for ER80S-B2
Being low alloy steel with added alloying elements such as Nickel, chromium & Moly, ER80S-B2 requires stringent control on welding preheat, interpass & PWHT conditions to avoid cracking problems.
The minimum welding preheat temperature when welding with ER80S-B2 is 275°F (135°C).
The interpass temperature for welding application using R80S-B2 is a maximum of 325°F (165°C).
